I've been playing a game called Journey this week during exams. After sitting at a desk for hours, pouring over old notes and trying to decipher my own handwriting, this game was an utter god-send. Beautiful visuals, gorgeous music, and a rich and compelling storyline make Journey one of the games on my "comfort shelf". It was such an amazing experience, and never failed to calm me down and make me feel so much better. Supposedly it's a 90 minute game, but I played it in short bursts and only finished it this morning.
What was amazing about Journey was that other players are randomly dropped into your game. You cannot communicate with them through voice or text, but you nevertheless feel that you should work together.
I cannot even begin to express the feeling that I had as I stood at the end of a tunnel, with only white light shining through. I knew it was the end of the game. Then another figure appeared in the foreground of my screen. The friend that I thought had been lost to the buffeting winds and ice of a previous level had come back, and simply stood beside me, waiting to take the last step of the journey together.
Thank you, JotunNeko. You stood with me at the end of the game. I never got to talk to you, but I'd like to thank you for the experience and the journey. I don't suppose you'll ever see this, but this is dedicated to you.
You did a great job with the light: the effect is soft, enchanting on the edges of the figure, bright and full in the middle of the scene; and the blue you've chosen is quite a rich, intense shade. Looking at this picture, you really have the impression that you're walking with them towards the light and the end of your journey.
ThatGameCompany really outdone itself this time. drew inspiration from so many sources and brought them all together in the most Beautifully! the awe inspiring vastness of the desert; the nostalgic ruins of antiquity; the zen like moments of existence; the depths of the emotional experience; the humbling realization of significance; the beauty of the wordlessness and music; the elegant minimalism of the travelers; the joy of companionship and knowing your not alone; and the realization and acceptance that your journey has not ended.
